Diffusion Confusion? Helpful Suggestions for Safe Essential Oil Diffusion
The laws of nature are to be obeyed. Just like there are laws of gravity, laws of growth, and maturation of seeds to plants, there are laws governing the safe use of essential oils. It’s imperative to understand these laws to safeguard the boundaries of others.
Essential oils are volatile concentrated elements of the very essences of earth. Respect for their power and influence in our lives is a must. Knowledge of our bodies and how they respond to essential oils is vital when considering how and when to use aromatherapy safely with minimal risk to families, clients, and ourselves.
The essential oil safety certification course I am taking is providing valuable insight on the safe use of diffusion. Robert Tisserand’s Essential Oil Safety course teaches reverence for knowledge and responsible use of essential oils in our personal and professional lives.

Studies have shown that essential oils are only effective for approximately 45-60 minutes. After that time, the body actually begins to experience irritation, and the oil’s efficacy is diminished. Therefore, when diffusing oils, allow ample time for the body to recover before beginning diffusion again. It is best to diffuse for 5-10 minutes, and then discontinue for 60-90 minutes. High quality diffusers have timers that will allow you to adhere to a safe schedule.
Be aware of groups who may be vulnerable to essential oil diffusion, including children from newborn to five years of age, persons with chronic breathing problems such as asthma or COPD, elderly persons, and those with diminished immune systems.
Essential oil diffusion is a sound and sacred method to soothe and calm the mind and emotions. When diffusing in public places it is important to select oils with lower risk of potential allergic reaction or irritation, at concentrations that still achieve the desired effect of relaxation while giving the body ample recovery time. Diffuse responsibly to provide the most beneficial outcomes for all those experiencing the oils. Remember that you are the steward of not only your body, but also all who come in contact with your oils. Follow the laws of safe essential oil use and you will enhance the health and well being of you and those you love.
